Born in 1953 in Ravensburg, Germany.
Robert Schad graduated from the Kalsruhe Academy of Fine Arts in 1980.
Robert Schad creates designs in space from massive steel tubes. The lines are the result not only of curvatures and twists, but also of the addition of pieces of straight shape and different lengths, welded together. The welding points are sanded and take on an organic appearance, like joints. The graphic movement develops in space in large curves and flights to become sculpture. The physical heaviness of solid steel is abolished.
We are then in the presence of a form with human dimensions which unfolds to dance in space.
From 1985 for a commission from the Museum für neue Kunst, Robert Schad switched to the exclusive use of steel in his sculptures. Solid steel bars with a square section of 4.5 cm and 6 to 16 cm for exterior parts. The bar remains of human proportion, the hand maintains contact with the material, it is this which maintains control of the gesture in space, like the pencil at the fingertips. Robert Schad through this continuity draws with steel bars.
The steel is not forged, it is cut and welded. Robert Schad breaks possible curves. It imposes a seemingly jerky rhythm and inscribes it in an undulation linked to the danced expressions.
The forms placed directly without a base, emerge from the ground, like trees or rest there like a step. The form is always unbalanced in its movement and yet stable.
